The end of Flash?

Friday, July 17th, 2015

The end of FlashDo you remember when Steve Jobs wrote an open letter on the security issues of Flash? That was way back in 2010.

Guess others should have listened to him while he was alive because Flash remained bug ridden over the years and many hackers have taken mean advantage.

iPhones never supported Flash. Android smartphones don’t either (they did initially though!). YouTube parted ways with Flash in January 2015.  Now, if you are a Firefox user you would have noticed that the Flash plugin has been blocked by default. YouTube videos may also not play if you have not selected the HTML 5 player.  If that’s the case, you can rectify the issue by visiting the following URL:

All this mess, and you still find some Sri Lankan clients wanting Flash on their new website… Aiyo!  Kata kiyannada??

Critical bug on Microsoft Windows

Friday, November 21st, 2014

According to Microsoft, there has been a critical vulnerability on Windows that could enable remote code execution.  The report can be read here:

https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS14-064

The bug allows hackers to remotely take control of a PC, and has been present in every version of Microsoft’s operating system since Windows 95. The bug was rated at 9.3 out of a possible 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS), a measure of severity in computer security.

The good news is that Microsoft has tackled the security issues by releasing 14 software patches in its monthly security update for Windows, according to a report from the BBC.
